The Community restores degraded habitats of the protected landscape of Cuatro Calas, in Águilas (15/03/2018)

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has recovered degraded habitats of the protected landscape of Cuatro Calas, in guilas, which had been damaged by the entry of vehicles that were parked or circulated in areas of vegetation to access the different beaches.

The General Director of the Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosauro, visited this action today and stressed that "the management of public use and actions such as those we do allow to better preserve this natural landscape that had been degraded by the transit of vehicles through areas of protected vegetation" .

The management of public use of access to beaches has focused on the correct delimitation of parking areas and roads, to avoid the inadequate traffic of motor vehicles over areas occupied by protected vegetation.

For this, almost 300 linear meters have been installed, as a barrier, of ecological wooden sleepers and large rocks.

The action carried out by the Community involves the improvement of soil permeability, through its decompaction, facilitating the natural restoration of more than 5,000 square meters of dune and salt habitats in areas degraded by inadequate vehicle traffic.

Likewise, natural colonization by indigenous plant species will be favored, benefiting the occupation of the area by species of fauna typical of the natural area, such as curlews, rattlesnakes, wheatears or the peregrine falcon, among others.

'Destino Natura' and investment in Cuatro Calas

"The delimitation of roads and parking areas will offer greater quality to the large number of tourists visiting this protected landscape, especially during the summer, thanks to the protection of its attractive geological forms, the improvement of the natural landscape and the increase in road safety, "he said.

With the initiative 'Destination nature' "the regional government seeks that we can all enjoy our natural spaces in a sustainable way and respectful of their natural values," said Rosauro.

This action of the Office of Socioeconomic Promotion of the Environment of the General Directorate of Natural Environment has involved the investment of more than 34,000 euros, co-financed with European funds Feder.

The protected landscape Cuatro Calas occupies the last territories of the Region of Murcia on its border with Andalusia.

"Its coastal reliefs alternate cliffs with coves of special beauty (Calarreona, La Higuerica, La Carolina and Cocedores), inland, the landscape of esparto steppe, cambrn and cornical is lost in the horizon between ravines and glens with spectacular forests of tamarisk".
