The City of Ãguilas launches an Environmental Sensitization Project on the oceanic Posidonia (13/04/2018)

The City of Águilas has launched a project that aims to raise awareness among primary and secondary students about the importance of caring for and maintaining the oceanic posidonia.

The initiative, developed by the Department of Local Development and Training, "takes special relevance in a municipality like Águilas since this marine plant has a wide distribution on our coasts despite being highly threatened," said the first mayor, Mari Carmen Moreno , in the visit to one of the schools that are participating in this project.

The oceanic posidonia forms underwater meadows that are protected by the Habitat directive, besides playing a fundamental role in the conservation of the coasts and in the maintenance of the fishing resources.

"The objective, therefore, is for schoolchildren to know that what we popularly know as algae is not trash, but rather the opposite, as they indicate the good quality of our waters," said Moreno.

It should be noted that the project, which will involve 1,880 students, has been developed by the pedagogue María José García and the biologist Marina Candela Sánchez.

Both are participants in the Public Employment Program "Strengthening the service of economic development and training of the City of Águilas" aimed at young beneficiaries of Youth Guarantee and co-financed by the Autonomous Community, the European Social Fund and the City of Águilas.
