The President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, today expressed the condolences of the regional government for the death of former Central Bank president and the Marquis de Aguilas, Alfonso Escamez, at 94 years of age.
Valcárcel regretted "the loss of employer aquiline, thanks to their effort and dedication, made it to the top in the financial industry as president of one of the first banks in Spain."
Escámez Alfonso, born in Aguilas, was elected president of the Central Bank in 1973 and succeeded in putting the organization as leading financial group in the country.
During his tenure, carried out important steps, inter alia, banking sector restructuring in the mid-80 and the merger with Banco Hispano.
After leaving office in 1992, was named honorary president of the Fundación Central Hispano.
In 1991, King Juan Carlos I granted the title of Marquis of Eagles.
