The Águilas City Council will begin shortly with a program to enhance the defensive systems of the town.
The project - according to the mayor, Mari Carmen Moreno, and the mayor of Tourism and Local Development, Ginés Desiderio Navarro - will enable the recovery of three bunkers built during the Civil War and that served as an early defense of the Naval Base of Cartagena.
The three bunkers are located along the Grand Route GR 92 E 15. Two of them are located between the beaches of Cañada del Negro and Matalentisco, and the other is between Cala de las Tortugas and Calarreona;
all of them very well integrated in the environment to make it difficult to observe them from the sea.
Despite the fact that the three of them are on privately-owned land, the owners have granted the necessary permits not only for the value of them but also for the installation in the environment of historical, environmental, tourist and landscape information.
Regarding the work to be done, these consist of emptying rubble from the interior, cleaning and securing structures, finishing and covering the roof with earth, as originally built.
Outside, the access trenches will be reconditioned, proceeding also to the placement of explanatory panels and fencing with natural elements to avoid accidents and vandalism.
It should be noted that the action, with a maximum execution period of 12 months, will cost € 33,507'78, which will be subsidized in full with EAFRD funds.
