Among the actions to be developed within the framework of the New Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (PACES of the European Union - Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy) that guilas City Council has subscribed to, has begun to be carried out in our municipality and in two others in the Region of Murcia, by the service of Environment and Climate Change Promotion of the General Directorate of Natural Environment and the University "Miguel Hernndez", the "Study on the urban effects of islands of heat in three municipalities (guilas, Cartagena and Lorca) ", directed, as principal investigator, by Professor Agustn Prez Marn.
The objective of the study is to observe if there is an effect called "heat island", that is, the existence of a significant difference of temperatures between the urban environment and the rural environment for different times of the year.
As part of this study, 4 temperature and humidity sensors (dataloggers hygrometers) have been located for twelve months, in different points of our municipality, 3 of them in an urban environment and one in a rural environment.
The location of the devices in our municipality has been carried out by a rigorous random selection, based on statistical sampling techniques, which will make the chosen place representative of the locality and not compromise the results of the study.
The positioning of the sensors and their protection (sentry box) has been carried out in street lighting lamps, at a minimum height of 3 meters, in a non-invasive way.
The New Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy PACES has as its mission to create a network of cities committed to:
• Reduce emissions by 40% before 2030 through better local management of energy based on energy efficiency and the promotion of clean energy.
• Improve the resilience of cities, mitigating the impact of climate change and / or adapting to it.
• Share the vision, results, experiences and technical knowledge with other cities within and outside the EU.
