The beach 'La Higuerica' of guilas joins the network 'Playas sin Humo', an initiative launched by the Ministry of Health for the first time in the region, and involving all the municipalities of the regional coast.
The initiative is developed under the motto 'It is normal to not smoke' to raise awareness, promote health and protect the environment.
The Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, visited today, along with the mayor of guilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, this beach where the badges have been installed that identify it as a tobacco-free zone.
Villegas stressed that "this initiative is voluntary and aims to raise awareness about the importance of not smoking, with a double effect on health and the environment."
Villegas said that this campaign is part of a "more ambitious" plan of the anti-smoking strategy prepared by the Ministry of Health to achieve a region free of smoke in 2025. "We want to change the habits of many people with these initiatives in public spaces and guide them to healthy lifestyles as a preventive measure, "he remarked.
"The tobacco is one of the biggest problems of public health", explained the holder of Health, who remembered that according to the last data of the national survey, the Region of Murcia takes a descending tendency in the daily consumption of tobacco.
Thus, it is five points lower than in 2003, reaching 23.2 percent of the population, and only a few points above the national average, which is 22 percent.
The Minister of Health also referred to the harm that tobacco causes to the environment and explained that nicotine and tar from a cigarette end contaminate 50 liters of water and it takes 10 years to degrade.
"It is the biggest plastic pollutant in the sea due to the cellulose acetate contained in the nozzles," Villegas added.
The beaches that are already part of this initiative can be found in the Murciasalud portal, in the QR codes that appear in the identification fences installed in the beach areas and in the more than 20,000 brochures distributed by the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the town halls.
In this portal 'Playas sin Humo' you can also access a satisfaction questionnaire, ratings and suggestions.
The beaches that have already joined this initiative are those of El Rihuete (Mazarrn), Villananitos (San Pedro del Pinatar), El Pescador and El Castillico, both in Santiago de la Ribera (San Javier), Mistral Beach in La Manga (San Javier), the beach of La Concha (Los Alczares) and Cartagena.
