The sculpture of El Durmiente, symbol of Murcian scouting, returns to Sierra Espuña with the help of aquiline sculptor Mario Fernández (14/11/2018)

The mayor of Tourism, Ginés Desiderio Navarro, attended this weekend to the opening of the Scout Museum headquarters in Sierra Espuña in an act that also recovered the image of the statue popularly known as "The sleeper."

The story of "The sleeper" goes back almost a century ago when the young Mariano Serrano, aquiline and scout died suddenly.

His colleagues, shocked by what happened, decided to build a monument in his memory in Sierra Espuña for being the place where the aquiline group camp was held.

The statue remained there for twelve years until in 1940 the Franco regime banned the movement scout, decreeing the seizure of their property, among which were the bust of Mariano Serrano.

The companions, to avoid it, took advantage of the night to dismantle the statue of the pedestal, to wrap it in blankets and to bury it in some point of Sierra Espuña.

They swore then that they would never say the place and that's how it was.

The location of the original sculpture remains a mystery, so the Scout Federation of Murcia decided, with the collaboration, among others, the City of Águilas, installing a replica replica of the work of aquiline sculptor Mario Fernández.
