The mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, together with the local development councilor, Ginés Desiderio Navarro, the municipal archaeologist, Juan de Dios Hernández, and the Economic-Financial Management technician, Diego María Martínez, visited the recovery works this morning of three bunkers built during the Civil War and that served as an early defense of the Naval Base of Cartagena.
In the same - noted Moreno - "is being carried out a performance of value of these defensive systems, as well as their environment."
The three bunkers are located along the Grand Route GR 92 E 15. Two of them are located between the beaches of Cañada del Negro and Matalentisco, and the other is between Cala de las Tortugas and Calarreona;
all of them very well integrated in the environment to make it difficult to observe them from the sea.
Although they are located on privately-owned land, the owners have granted the necessary permits not only for the enhancement of the same but also for the installation in the environment of historical, environmental, tourist and landscape information.
Regarding the work that is being carried out, and which is expected to be completed by next month, these consist of emptying rubble from the interior, cleaning and securing structures, finishing and covering the roof with earth, as they were built originally.
Outside, the access trenches will be reconditioned, proceeding also to the placement of explanatory panels and a fencing with natural elements to avoid accidents and vandalism.
It should be noted that the action, subsidized in its entirety with funds EAFRD, has a cost of 33.507'78 euros.
