Izquierda Unida-Verdes de Águilas has presented the Democratic Memory Plan for Águilas that it wants to develop over the next four years.
According to its candidate number 3 to the City Council, Noelia Cortés, "we believe it necessary to vindicate and dignify the figure of those who fought in our town for justice and freedom in the face of dictatorship, which means eliminating all exaltation of Francoism from our streets."
The aquiline historian Pedro Javier López, collaborator in the elaboration of this proposal, explains its content, structured in four axes.
"We want to create a commission of experts to study the persistence of Francoist symbology in our streets, rehabilitate and musealize spaces representative of the civil war in Águilas, such as the anti-air shelter known as Cueva de la Tía Petra, promote an institutional condemnation of the coup State of July 18, 1936 against the legitimate government of the Second Republic, and dignify the memory of the victims of civil war and dictatorship.
Noelia Cortés notes that "this is an ambitious project, which if carried out would be a pride for our people and would do justice to our own history."
He concludes by saying that "Águilas would win in democratic quality, in the enhancement of our most recent past and in tourist attraction with the creation of new cultural spaces".
