Last weekend Águilas celebrated Esparto Day; a day that serves to pay tribute to what for many years was one of the most important sectors of the local economy and to avoid, at the same time, that the espartera tradition disappears and that this year, due to the Covid-19 crisis, its traditional program of activities has been modified. On this occasion, the events have taken place in the square located next to the Esparto Interpretation Center with a much smaller capacity and without being able to carry out the samples and exhibitions carried out in previous editions. The day concluded with the recognition and tribute to the people linked to esparto to whom the mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno; the mayor of Culture, Maido Simó; and the coordinator of the events, Juan Hernández, presented recognition plaques.
This is how José Hernández, honorary artisan from the Region of Murcia, Juan Moreno "Viqui", were recognized for promoting the esparto culture through the Mussonas, and, posthumously, Antonio García, Antonio Lajarín and Antonio Pérez.
