The Cuesta de Gos Manzano Recovery Center is an initiative developed by the Department of Environmental Education of the Águilas City Council in conjunction with IES Europe.
Its main objective is the recovery of this fruit species so special for Murcian people, mainly for aquilines. This native and biferous species was cultivated since the 1st century and in the Murcian fields of Águilas it was one of the characteristic and important crops for trade at that time.
Unfortunately, today it is practically in oblivion, as it was replaced by other species with larger fruits.Sebastián Ramírez, in charge of Environmental Education activities of the Águilas City Council and manager of the initiative of the Manzano de la Cuesta de Gos Recovery Center, has been developing with the entire IES Europe community (teachers, students and administrative staff), medium actions that have been recognized with the Environmental Education Award, awarded by the newspaper La Verdad within the "II Awards for Environmental Sustainability".So much so that, thanks to the actions carried out by the teachers and students of the Initial Professional Qualification Program of "Nursery and Garden Auxiliary", the seeds of this apple tree were germinated and the resulting seedlings were sown in the frame of the Gardening Course last Wednesday. This activity aims to recover this emblematic species and make the aquiline people aware of the environmental and historical importance that this apple tree has for our region.
