Last February, the Mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, in collaboration with the Church of San José and the Cabildo de Cofradías, negotiated with the General Director of Cultural Assets, Rafael Gómez, the restoration of the size of the Patron Saint of Eagles.
The transfer of the image to the Restoration Center of the Autonomous Community, by a specialized company, took place this morning, before the excited gaze of the waitresses and assistants of the Virgin, who have proceeded to prepare it.
Also present were members of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows and the mayor of the town, who wanted to accompany the faithful at a time like this.
It is a historical event, since it is the first time in history that the image of the Patron Saint leaves the town.The restoration is scheduled to finish during the summer, hoping that the Dolorosa can process on September 15 IMAGE OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS It is a life-size dress image, whose head, hands and feet are carved in polychrome wood.
There is much controversy as to the authorship of this Dolorosa.
Some researchers believe that it is the work of Francisco Salzillo.
Others attribute it to his disciples, such as Roque López.
However, it also appears in some publication as the work of Fernández Caro.
She was declared Patroness of Aguilas at the end of the 19th century.
