The Department of Environment of the City of Eagles and CEIP Mediterráneo have developed an activity in defense of the common swallow.
"Before the decline of this bird the students of CEIP Mediterraneo comes to their aid and the whole center has been involved in the construction of artificial nests that will be placed in the municipality to favor the reproduction of the common swallow," said the mayor of Medio Environment, Isabel María Torrente.
Some 50 nests have been constructed by 300 elementary students aged between 6 and 11 years old, using clay with rope, with a concave shape, on a wooden base of 20x30 cm.
This bird, so well known and linked to man, is in serious regression, only in Spain one million copies per year are lost due to the use of pesticides, rural depopulation and new modes of architecture.
"This reduction of swallows," assured Torrente, "implies the deterioration of our quality of life and an impoverishment of our landscapes, since this bird, so linked to our culture, plays an important role as a natural insecticide."
