Coinciding with the celebration of World Biodiversity Day, the Council of the Environment of the City of Eagles has begun a program of recovery of native fruit trees with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of maintaining fruit biodiversity and motivating knowledge And use of these local varieties.
In collaboration with IES Europe and IES Rey Carlos III, there has been a plantation in both institutes of about 40 specimens of fruit of traditional varieties, among which stand out, Abanilla pereta, Murcian pereta, peasant pear, Velásquez peach or Apple tree of Alguazas, among others.
The mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, and the mayor of the Environment, Isabel María Torrente, have stressed that this new orchard will allow, thanks to the support of teachers and students of the module of Professional Training of Gardening of IES Europe, new copies Which will be distributed free of charge to all interested in its cultivation.
In addition, the space dedicated to these fruit trees located in the IES Carlos III, will serve the students of the Basic Cooking and Restoration FP cycle to elaborate menus using them as an ingredient.
From the Department of Environment have wanted to emphasize that only in the Segura Basin have been cataloged more than 700 varieties of fruit trees, highlighting in our municipality the variety of the apple tree of the Cuesta de Gos, and many of them are in serious Danger of abandoning the rural population and the introduction of more commercial varieties.
