The City Council of Eagles, together with HIDROGEA and ESAMUR, has launched the campaign 'Toallitas' to raise awareness of the problems caused by throwing wet wipes to the toilet.
The aim is to prevent the bottlenecks arising from the deposit of this product in the drains of the houses, in the pipes, as well as in the pumping stations and waste water treatment plants (WWTP).
On the other hand, the campaign aims to raise awareness about environmental care, reducing the impact of pollution on it.
With this, the City of Aguilas, ESAMUR and HIDROGEA bet on a sustainable management of waste, through a campaign aimed at citizens to raise awareness about the need to change their habits, avoiding to discard the wipes in the WC, which Is absolutely unsustainable.
Environmental Cost
Of the 90 wastewater treatment plants in the Region of Murcia, Hidrogea manages 33 to which 2,816 tons of wipes that have been flushed annually arrive, which is also known as 'the monster of wipes'.
The cost of cleaning these wastes, which clog pipes and pumps for the purification systems, means that the investment in maintenance and treatment of wastewater will increase between 4 and 6 euros per person per year.
This is equivalent to increasing between 8 and 14 percent these activities, according to data of the Spanish Association of Water Supply.
Specifically, replacing equipment damaged by this cause in a WWTP amounts to more than 250,000 euros, while the return of pumping equipment is estimated at 200,000 euros.
Specifically in Aguilas, it is estimated that the Wastewater Treatment Plant reaches about 48 tons of fibrous waste, on average, in a year.
These residues cause numerous problems of maintenance in the Plant.
Among the most important and frequent are the pump bumps (between 5 and 10 bursts per month) and accumulation of fibers in the upper part of the membranes, hindering the flow of suction and therefore the permeate of the same, which can Decrease the treatment capacity of the plant.
