The City Council of Águilas has requested its adhesion to the Network of Walking Cities;
an international association open to all those municipalities and administrations interested in improving the situation of pedestrians through the implementation and exchange of initiatives aimed at improving universal accessibility, road safety and the environment itself.
The petition, which was unanimously approved yesterday at the Ordinary Plenary Session in April, will mean - said the first mayor, Mari Carmen Moreno, "that Águilas will become the second municipality in the Region and 30 in Spain to be included in this network".
Among the concrete actions that includes being "Walking City" are to increase the overall mobility, design and manage spaces designed for people, improve the integration of pedestrian networks, make land planning in support of communication on foot or improve the sense of security, among others.
Thus, among the actions that will be carried out is the installation of information panels to encourage the planning and exploration of journeys on foot as well as the edition of metrominuto plans in which distances and times are specified by walking between different areas of the locality.
