This August 31 held a sad anniversary in our town, that of one of the bloodiest bombings aquiline population suffered during the civil war (1936-1939).
In the 1936 elections, the Spanish left united in the Popular Front was victorious;
the results were overwhelming in Aguilas, where leftist forces obtained the 21 councilors.
But right, afraid of losing their privileges forever, organized a military coup that failed and led the nation into civil war.
Eagles remained loyal to the Republican side and therefore came under attack by the national side.
The main incidents of the war in our town were the bombing by the Italian and German aircraft, which caused more than fifty deaths (most of them civilians) and ravaged the town, which was almost deserted.
The largest of these attacks was perpetrated on 31 August by the Italian aircraft led by Lieutenant Colonel Gostoli.
The five Italian Savoia S.79 bombers destroyed the tank machines railway facilities (used to produce military arsenal) and all around, causing a total of 16 killed and 15 wounded (some of whom died days later).
From United Left-Green Eagles do not want episodes as described be forgotten and we therefore invite the Eagles Hall in future years to make a tribute to the victims.
