Totem ship arrives to claim the Eagles to sustainability and renewable energy (22/09/2014)

Eagles Mayor Bartolome Hernandez attended this evening event organized to mark the arrival of the ship Totem to the city, a boat, 26 meters long, which began last August a voyage between Holland and Spain.

The local chief executive was accompanied by various municipal authorities as well as by numerous guests and representatives of the firm Koppert Biological Systems, the world leader in natural pollination and biological control, which has sponsored this initiative with the intent to pursue sustainable economic model and support innovation in renewable energy.

This family company of Dutch origin and present in more than eighty countries, was born in the seventies with the goal of making healthier production, large-scale fruit and vegetable, in alliance with the resources offered by the habitat itself, by the selective release of natural enemies that keep at bay the main crop pests.

Totem Tour offers the opportunity to check the performance of a prototype windmill, designed by the master of the vessel to transform the wind into electrical energy, with a power of 1,500 watts, five times more than many of the standard models used in sailing.

Along the way, we have collected very positive data, confirmed a reduction of up to twenty liters per day in the normal fuel consumption.

Similarly, the energy obtained meets the daily needs of boat batteries, which power the lighting and all electrical and electronic devices installed on board.

This tall ship was built in Germany in 1955 as a rescue ship for sea.

Today, its huge engine room has been converted into cabin areas and rugged steel hull many years left to withstand the vibration and noise of powerful engines, to become the base where two masts of 22 meters are supported ago long.

Its current owner, Evert Toxopeus, bought the boat in 1971 and it took ten years of hard work to transform it into a sailboat, great benefits, which has already been around the world.

This time, Evert makes this new adventure with his wife, Corry Koppert, daughter of the founder of Koppert Biological Systems, Jan Koppert.

Transformation Totem reflects that may go against and can become sustainable something that in principle was not designed well, "the same as we have been demonstrating in agriculture with excellent results," said Kris De Smet, commercial director of Koppert Spain during the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Bartolome Hernandez explained that, since 2001, the company has in Eagles with one of its most important production centers, in which thirty people work, an example of sustainable business management.

The roots of the firm in the city, similar to the one with Dutch town of Lansingerland, led Hernandez to travel to this place last year, invited by Koopert, where he signed a letter of intent for regional cooperation between the two cities and said company, which also stamped his initials Mayor Lansingerland, Ewald van Vliet, director Kooper and Biological Systems, Henri Oosthoek, also present at the event yesterday.
