This morning we held two important events, included in the program of the centenary of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), who attended the mayor of Eagle, Bartolome Hernandez, along with the Director General of Scientific and Technical Research Secretariat of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Marina Villegas, and the director of IEO, Eduardo Balguerías, accompanied by other officials of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Regional Government of Murcia and the City of Eagle.
The day began with an official reception at the mayor's aquiline where Bartolome Hernandez acknowledged the presence of different authorities who traveled to the town to support these commemorative events.
Then, in collaboration with the Foundation for Medical Research (FEM), the Auditorium and Congress Palace Infanta Doña Elena hosted a science conference, entitled '100 Years of Oceanographic Research' by the director of the Institute of Spanish Oceanography, Eduardo Balguerías.
The event, which was attended by about three hundred high school students of institutes of Eagles, was presented by Juan María Vázquez, professor at the University of Murcia and national coordinator of the Advisory Group for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean.
Finally, opened the exhibition '100 Years Researching the Sea (1914-2014)', which will remain until the end of next February in the Interpretation Center of the Sea (CIMAR), with visiting hours from 10 to 13 hours and 16 to 18 hours, open from Tuesday to Sunday.
The exhibition includes a small part of this century history of the IEO, but mainly focuses on the research of Murcia Oceanographic Centre (Marine Laboratory and Plant Mariculture), with illustrative panels and display of oceanographic equipment.
During the opening act, a topobatimétrico relief map of the continental margin of southeastern Spanish, made by the Group of Marine Geology IEO he belonged aquiline Juan Acosta Yepes, who has dedicated a commemorative plaque placed in that placed map that has been permanently installed in the CIMAR.
Thus, end activities held in Águilas to honor these hundred years of oceanographic research, a commemorative program that also included a visit of the ship 'Ramón Margalef' last November, which were conducted concerted visits schools in the locality.
The Spanish Institute of Oceanography, created by Royal Decree of April 17, 1914, is a public research organization (OPI) dedicated to research in marine science, especially in relation to scientific knowledge of the oceans, sustainability fishery resources and the marine environment.
It depends on the Ministry of Economy and Finance, through the Ministry of Research.
The IEO, which has a staff of about 700 people, is not limited to conduct basic and applied research, also scientific advisor and technologically administrations on issues related to oceanography and marine sciences.
In fact, according to the Sea Fisheries Act 2001, it is the researcher and advisor to the sectoral fisheries policy of the government agency.
Furthermore, it is the scientific and technological representative of Spain in most international forums and organizations related to the sea and its resources.
The Spanish Institute of Oceanography carries out basic and applied in oceanography and marine science research and other services to the scientific development and maintenance of industrial, social and business activities, with the aim of increasing scientific knowledge of oceans and sustainable use thereof is made.
